I am currently a Firefighter/Paramedic in Florida, I have 7 years experience as a paramedic in 911, inter-facility, and Emergency Room settings, 3 years as a Firefighter/Paramedic in a busy agency that services a very large retirement community in Florida. I worked in the country's busiest ER at Florida Hospital Orlando for over 2 years.
I'm also a paramedic field training officer so any new paramedics we hire come ride with me before sitting with the medical director to get cleared to practice on their own. I have my A.S. In EMS and will finish my bachelors of science in health sciences with a specialization in community paramediciene next summer. After that I have a few science classes to take then I can begin applying to PA schools in the Orlando area. My idea is to apply to UF first since they have the shortest list of pre-reqs I would need, then after a few more classes I could apply to Nova Southeastern and Adventist University. If I don't get in on my first attempt I plan on continuing to take classes at UCF working towards a second bachelors in health sciences to be a more legitimate degree compared to my community paramedicene one. I would like opinions on you all think of my plan, advice, suggestions, etc.
My GPA when I finished my A.S. Was 3.5 and currently my GPA they have calculated for my bachelors is a 3.0, should be around a 3.5 when I finish the program next summer. I have a couple withdrawls on my transcript from when I was working on my A.S. UF alum here. Overall your app looks competitive with regards to your work experience. Every class over the last few years has had at least 3 or 4 paramedics and a handful of EMTs.
The two medics I was close with excelled in EM (obviously), cards and pulm which make up the bulk of the PANCE. The only thing I can stress is the GPA. It's not gonna make you stand out as an applicant, but it can drive your file into the round bin.
At 3.5 you should be okay, but what will your last like 60 hours GPA look like? They tend to appreciate trends in the right direction.Also, if they still allow you a personal statement, use it to really stand out. Don't give them the typical garbage. The woman that heads the selection process has to read 1500+ of those things, so make it interesting.If you haven't, check out physicianassistantforum.com and the UF subform. And don't get discouraged by people posting their 'stats.' I had awesome clinical experience and a mediocre undergrad GPA but did well in the program. I had a similar experience.
Paramedic then back to school for PA. I also had withdrawals hurting my GPA, but I explained them in my essay/statement that basically I had matured working in EMS. You look very competitive.
I love PA school and it is a great route, but you cannot work and do PA school. So it takes a lot of help and resources to make it through. If I had to do it over again I would have done a paramedic bridge to RN: one year and then done nurse practitioner online. With this route you can work the whole way through.
